4 steps to starting a fitness routine

Many of you know that I am very disciplined about my fitness routine. I workout 5 times a week. Yes - you read that right - 5 times a week. Most people are amazed that I keep that kind of routine with everything that is going on in my life. Work, a long commute, taking care of the house, squeezing in some fun. So how can you start a fitness routine that keeps you motivated and to keep going back for more?

I found that there are 4 easy steps that keep me interested and motivated to keep a workout routine. I hope these steps help you create a lifelong fitness routine no matter what your age or fitness level. If you try any of these steps, let me know if they worked for you or not.


At first you may say "I don't have any activity I love", but that just means you have to be willing to try new things. Do you love being outdoors? Try going hiking or power-walking. Do you love to ride your bicycle? Try a spin class! The key is to think about things you love to do and how you can incorporate that into your routine.



We schedule so many activities in our lives. Think about it - getting a haircut; meeting friends for lunch or dinner; going to see a movie; date night. Why not schedule time to exercise? I find that if I plan my workouts for the week - I am more likely to stick to going to the gym. I've written it down and therefore made an appointment with myself to take care of myself! What else could be more important?



Think you can't do yoga because you aren't flexible? WRONG! Think you can't do Mega-former because you are too out of shape? WRONG! Think you can't run on a treadmill because it is too hard? WRONG! The key is to try new things. Yoga is all about self-acceptance of your physical body's limit and the connection to your mind. Mega-former is a low impact exercise focusing on tension. Will you feel silly the first 5 times you do either? Of course! But that is the fun of it! No one steps onto a yoga mat for the first time & is an expert. It is yoga practice - not yoga perfect! But if you don't try new things - how do you know if you don't like it?


#4 STICK TO IT It takes 21 days to form a habit. But let's face it - there will be days you simply can't workout! Your stressed from work or family life; you are exhausted from a hectic schedule; or you simply aren't feeling it. THAT IS OK! You aren't perfect! There are days I don't do the workout I planned to do based on how my body is feeling. Sometimes, I don't go to the gym because I am not into it that day. But does that mean I simply stop all together? NO - it just means I give myself a pass that day and workout the next day. You cannot beat yourself up and then go down a spiral where you stop exercising. This is a lifelong commitment to health. You have the rest of your life to exercise!
