Mushrooms are one of the hottest health trends next to anything gut health related. I love incorporating mushrooms into any meal through-out the day - breakfast, lunch and dinner. But I've recently read about how there are many varieties of mushrooms with a variety of health benefits. In general, mushrooms are high in antioxidants and contains selenium, which is a mineral not usually found in fruits & vegetables.
Selenium helps to prevent inflammation and plays a role in liver enzyme function. Also, selenium helps support the immune system by increasing response to infection by stimulating the production of killer T-cells.* With benefits like that, who wouldn't want to incorporate more mushrooms into their diet?
Now, to complicate things, there are a ton of mushroom varieties out there. I tend to stick to a few well known mushrooms when cooking - white button, portobello and shitaki, Since there are a lot more varieties that have health benefits that I am not even used to seeing in local food stores, I decided to try Four Sigmatic SuperFoods 10 Mushroom Blend.
What I love about the mushroom blend is a little bit goes a long way. I love using it in soups and casseroles. Only 1 teaspoon and you get all the health benefits in any recipe - you can even add it to smoothies! The blend adds a little bit of a smoky flavor but otherwise you won't even notice the product was added to the recipe.
I am all for adding healthy ingredients into my cooking routine without adding a lot of unknown flavors that my significant other may decide it is not for him! What he doesn't know won't hurt him!
