3 reasons why you need eucalyptus oil right now
This year the flu has been a really nasty strain. I do not get the flu shot because I do not have any underlying conditions that would compromise my immune system. I try to live a healthy life by exercising routinely, eating a mostly plant-based diet and taking supplements like vitamin D and probiotics.
For the past two months, I've been using eucalyptus oil in the diffuser. I happen to see a quick blurb about how it is good for congestion. I had some in the house, so I figured let's try it. My house is old (built in 1940) and while I've renovated it, replaced the furnace and had all the ducts cleaned - it is still very dusty. So I have congestion, especially in the morning.
When I have eucalyptus running in the diffuser, I definitely can breath better and it helps loosen any stuffiness I may have in my sinuses. Since I've had a good experience with the oil, I wanted to learn more. While eucalyptus oil has many uses, here are 3 reasons why you should be using it during cough cold & flu season.
#1 IT IS AN IMMUNE STIMULANT
Eucalyptus oil is known to stimulate protective cells in the body. These cells are responsible for ingesting harmful foreign particles, bacteria and dead or dying cells. The cells are essential for fighting infections. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phagocyte) Aromatherapist KG Stiles recommends using Eucalyptus as an inhalant or in your diffuser to deliver the healing vapors directly into your circulatory system via the lungs.
#2 IT CONTROLS COUGHING
The active ingredient in eucalyptus oil is Eucalyptol, which helps to control coughs. There are cough drops that contain eucalyptus oil if you are on the go and can't spend time with a diffuser.
#3 IT IS A SINUS DECONGESTANT
As I mentioned above, the biggest benefit I have is the decongestant. I simply run the diffuser for 1 hour while I am working and it definitely helps to loosen any stuffiness I have. Natural Living Ideas states you can also use eucalyptus oil in a carrier oil and rub it on your chest to help relieve congestion.
