The Simple and Startling Truth About Drinking Water
Most of us walk around with a bottle of water, yet we are dehydrated. How can that be? We've heard over and over again how important it is to drink water. We all know that our bodies are mostly water. Why is it so hard to be hydrated? The simple fact is we don't drink enough of it!
What if I told you we need to drink half our body weight in ounces of water, everyday. That means if you weigh 200 pounds, you need to drink 100 ounces of water per day. Most of us, including myself, did not know that we should be drinking that much water daily. If you follow the standard guideline of drinking 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water a day, then you should weigh 128 pounds. Most of us don't weigh 128 pounds which means we need to drink more water.
Not only do we need to drink more water, the water quality must be good. This means the water is purified and does not contain containment's. The one downside of drinking more clean water is the increased usage of plastic bottles. This is really bad for both the environment and our bodies. Did you know plastic is one of the most prevalent chemicals inside our body? The old adage of "we are what we eat" applies to what we drink as well. Studies are just starting to identify the health impact of having plastic in our bodies. The website Mercola states that in the US, 94% of tap water samples were found to contain plastic.
You may be thinking that if you drink only bottled water, then you are safe from plastics. Not so! MindBodyGreen states that bottled water companies use chemicals that can seep into the water you are drinking. Even if the bottle is BPA free, there are other chemicals used in bottled water that causes disruptions in the health of our bodies. A better option is to buy a really good water filtration system. If you are going to use your refrigerator for filtered water, make sure to change the filter every 3 months not 6 months like the manual tells you.
There are many really good water filtration systems that you can buy. The Berkey system has a cult following! They have products that cost less than $0.02 per gallon (so they claim) based on their performance. That is a better deal than buying bottled water! Berkey even has a portable water bottle with a filter. Perfect if you travel a lot and want to stop buying bottles of water at the airport. I've also noticed that more airports are offering water filling stations which can helps reduce plastic bottle usage. Not only is that good for your body but it is good for the environment.
I know water can get boring at times. There are many ways to make it more interesting. The Food Network has recipes such as Strawberry-Cucumber water, Pineapple Mint Ginger water, even Tomato Celery Bell Pepper water. Or you can just simply opt for a lemon or lime or both! Another way to shake up the water routine is to drink herbal tea. Why does herbal tea count as part of a daily water intake? Because it helps replace fluids like water does but it also contains antioxidants. Making herbal tea a healthy option when you need to break up the water routine. (Source: EliteDaily)
What type of tea should you try? Green tea is a great option. It is known for its high antioxidant activity and polyphenols, which may protect against cellular damage consistent with aging. Green tea studies have also shown it can slow down the growth of tumors cells in certain types of cancer. Rooibos tea may protect the liver from oxidative stress, lowers blood pressure and relaxing tense tissues. When looking for herbal teas, make sure to buy organic to avoid any chemicals in processing of the tea and in the material used in the actual tea bag. Try to avoid bottled teas due to their potentially high sugar content.
Drinking more water has multiple health benefits beyond keeping our bodies hydrated. Here are just a few:
Reduces joint pain: Cartilage, part of the cushion in our joints, is 80% water. Keep your joints lubricated means reduced joint pain.
Keeps the Digestive System Moving: The digestive tract needs water to bind to waste and help the bowels work properly. If you are constipated, you need more water.
Eliminates Toxins from the Body: Urinating is one of three ways our bodies eliminate toxins. If you are dehydrated, you are holding onto toxins in your body.
