Do you get colds, flu's or other respiratory illnesses throughout the year? If you do, that is a sign that your immune system needs help. Our bodies are smart. They will tell us what they want if we just listen to them. Sickness is more than just an annoyance that makes us miss out on family, work and social gatherings. It is a signal that we need to start doing something different.
Thinking about our immune system only during cough cold season or when the flu or some other illness is making a lot of people sick, is the wrong strategy. Our immune system needs support all year round.
If you eat healthy 80% of the time (none of us can be 100%! Life happens), which means avoiding chemicals, pesticides, processed foods, added sugar and unhealthy fats while instead eating whole fruits, grains, vegetables and healthy fats, then your immune system will be strong. You won't have to worry about getting sick even if you are exposed to a sickness. Your immune system will fight pathogens and keep you well.
How do you know if you need to work on strengthening your immune system?
If you suffer from gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, brain fog, lack of energy, moodiness, skin rashes, abdominal pain, anxiety, frequent belching or stomach gurgling, your immune system is unhealthy. Why? Because 70% of our immune system is in our gut. If you are experiencing even just one or two of the symptoms that I just listed, then your gut is unhealthy which means your immune system is unhealthy.
How would eliminating your symptoms improve your life? You could:
✅Be more present with your children
✅Thrive in your career
✅Improve your communication and your relationships
✅Have more fun!
✅Move your body and improve your fitness
✅Lose weight and feel better about yourself
✅Be able to cook healthy meals for you and your family
✅Take an active vacation
✅Reclaim your life!

While eating healthy food helps heal the body and keeps the immune system strong, incorporating healthy products into your day can also help. I use three products almost daily to help keep my immune system strong all year round.
They are: Turmeric, Hemp Seeds and Matcha.
Surprised? I thought you would be! These are not products most would associate with strengthening the immune system. So let me explain.
You may know turmeric as the yellow spice that is used in curry. What you may not know is turmeric has been used for centuries in Asian traditional medicine to treat various disorders. Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that turmeric is active against different viruses, bacteria and fungi, including even highly pathogenic, emerging and multi-drug-resistant strains. There are numerous studies that show turmeric has antiviral activity against several different viruses including hepatitis viruses, influenza viruses and emerging arbo-viruses like the Zika virus. It is very important that when using turmeric, it is paired with black pepper. Studies have shown that piperine, the active component of black pepper, can help your body absorb curcumin from turmeric. Curcumin is the active component in turmeric. I take a supplement because I find it hard to cook or drink turmeric tea regularly. Below is the product I take.
Since you can cook with turmeric as well, here are some recipes to check out.
This recipe would also work with almond or cashew milk.
What a great way to start the day!
Contains Garlic, Ginger & Turmeric
A great Meatless Monday dinner with Turmeric
What I love about this recipe is instead of eggs, tofu crumbles or soy-free crumbles can be used to make it vegan.
Hemp seeds are mostly known for being high in omega's and protein. But they are also high in zinc. Zinc which is a mineral that plays a role in supporting the immune system. Zinc activates lymphocytes or T-cells, which are necessary to initiate an immune response. (Source: Today)
One note of caution with hemp seeds is they inhibit platelet formation and interact with anticoagulant medications, causing a higher risk of bleeding. If you have been prescribed an anticoagulant, talk to your doctor before consuming a large amount of hemp. (Source: Medical News Today)
Hemp seeds are becoming easier to find. In fact I just bought a bag of organic hemp seeds at Costco. Hemp seeds have a nutty flavor and can be used in a variety of dishes. How can you incorporate Hemp Seeds into your everyday routine?
First, you can put them into any smoothie you are making. They incorporate really well and are high in protein, giving your smoothie extra power. Try making this Ginger & Hemp "heal yourself" smoothie from Trinity's Conscious Kitchen. Click here for the recipe.
Another idea is to make this Vegan Hemp Seed Pesto from the Spruce. The pesto can be used on anything from pasta, as a spread on toasty garlic bread or as a dip for meat-free nuggets. Click here for the recipe.
Another option is to try these Veggie, Hemp & Millet Nuggets from The First Mess. I don't know about you, but I am always looking for new ways to make vegan or vegetarian main dishes for our meat-free nights. I am definitely trying this recipe. Click here for the recipe.
Matcha is finely ground green tea powder. The powder is more potent than green tea leaves found in tea bags which is why it delivers so many more benefits. Matcha is a great addition to your daily routine because of its high antioxidant activity.
Antioxidants offer antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects that support immunity. In addition, green tea acts as a prebiotic, food for the beneficial gut bacteria tied to healthy immunity. If you want to learn more about prebiotics, check out my blog post on why you need prebiotics by clicking here.
Matcha may seem expensive when you are shopping the various brands that exist. But the product really goes a long way. You only need 1/2 tsp to make one latte so what ever size you buy it will last for months. I am currently using Organic Matcha that I bought on amazon. Below is the link to check it out.
Matcha can be sipped in a latte or used while cooking. Below is a simple matcha latte recipe and a few other recipe ideas.
A very simple recipe to make a matcha latte:
1/2 tsp Match powder
12/cup boiling water
1 tsp raw honey
1/2 cup heated almond milk (or any nut milk)
Boil the water
Scoop 1/2 tsp Matcha powder into mug
Pour boiling water into mug, add raw honey and stir well to mix. Some people even use a small whisk to incorporate the ingredients
Heat up almond milk - 1 minute for 1/2 cup
Using a hand-held frother, froth the milk. If you don't have a hand-held frother, simply pour the heated almond milk into the cup.
I hope this post on three products that can help you avoid colds and illness gave you some ideas on how to support your immune system all year round. It is too late to think about your immune system when you are getting sick.
