Haven't tried one? You definitely should. I know what you are thinking. YUCK! I am going to put salt water in my nose and it is going to feel good? Yes it will! Neti Pots are so great because they relieve stuffy noses and sinus pressure. But why is that good for gut health?
By keeping our nasal passages clean and healthy, it helps protect our gut against pathogens that could make us sick. In fact, studies have shown that people who struggle with chronic sinus infections have less bacterial diversity in the microbes of their nose, which leads to your gut. When we have more bad bacteria than good or we lack diversity of bacterial and fungal species in our gut, it leads to chronic inflammation. When we have chronic inflammation, it makes the mucus membrane in the sinuses swell and block fluid which leads to an infection. (Source: Dr. Will Cole)
Neti Pots are really easy to use. It can be done routinely, when you wake up or before you go to bed or whenever you feel sinus pressure or stuffy. Simply use warm sterile water, don't use tap water due to all the chemicals that are in it, and a solution you can buy at any store. Mix the prepared solution with the warm water so it dissolves. Lean over a sink and start to slowly pour the water into one nostril. It may drain out the other side but if you are really stuffed, it may just run out the same side! Make sure to have a tissue available!
Once half the pot is drained into one nostril, move on to the other side. When the pot is empty, keep leaning over the sink and blow your nose into a tissue. Do not hold the sides of our nose! Simply blow and both sides will release mucus! Afterwards, you will feel a nice release in your sinuses.
I started using an essential oil diffuser a couple of years ago. What I love about it is the variety of essential oils that have health benefits. It is so interesting to know that essential oils can be used for proactively managing your health. There are essential oils that can be taken orally but make sure to look for the statement Internal Use on the label. That is how you know the oil can be taken safely to promote good digestive health.
Oils that are good for digestive health and can be used in a diffuser are fennel oil, coriander, cardamom, and ginger. Cardamom, coriander and ginger are known for their antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties which ensures healthy functioning of the gastric juices in the stomach. Fennel has been shown to improve quality of life for people suffering from IBS when taken internally. Fennel can also be put in a diffuser. (Source: Yogi Approved)
How do essential oils work when they are diffused? Essential oils can help alter our physical, mental and emotional well-being by triggering and strengthening our bodies’ own natural processes. They are made up of tiny molecules that can deliver healing properties to the systems that control our physiological state. When essential oils are inhaled through the nose, tiny nerves send an immediate signal to the brain and go straight to work on the systems that moderate our minds and bodies. Inhalation can be the most direct delivery method of these incredibly nurturing components in essential oils, since the chemical messengers in the nasal cavity have direct access to the brain. Dry brushing is one of my favorite activities that supports a healthy gut. Dry brushing helps with detoxification by increasing blood circulation and promoting lymph flow and drainage. Lymph is found throughout our entire body, including the digestive tract. In fact the largest collection of lymphatic vessels is located surrounding the gastrointestinal tract.
When the intestinal lymphatic system is healthy, it helps to maintain the balance of good bacteria in our gut and helps keep the intestinal lining well. The lymphatic vessels help keep out harmful toxins and pathogens while allowing for the absorption of nutrients. When the lymphatic system is sluggish or inflammed, it cannot help keep our digestive tract healthy. (Source: The Chopra Center)
Dry brushing is very easy to do. It only takes about 5 to 15 minutes and you can do it everyday, if you remember. Dry brushes are easy to find and not expensive. I bought one on amazon and it came with a booklet of instructions on how to do it.
