The Amazing Power of a Positive Attitude

August 15, 2018

Ever feel like it is a struggle to be positive? Maybe you are stuck in a job that isn't challenging or maybe you are having a hard time in your personal life. Or maybe you are just tired of doing everything for everybody and having very little time for yourself. Believe me, it happens to all of us. We get stuck in a negative mind-set, we may not even know it, and it can be hard to reverse it.

But what if I told you a positive attitude can be a powerful influence in your life? I'm sure you've heard the saying (paraphrasing) "it is all in how we react to situations that matters". There have been studies that show negativity can increase your chances of disease. For example, a 2014 study in the journal Neurology linked high levels of negativity to an increased risk of dementia. (Source: Delicious Living) That is some scary stuff!

Now don't get me wrong, there is a certain satisfaction when engaging in negative conversations, such as complaining about work or gossiping about others. It is healthy to vent so you don't keep negativity bottled up. But how do you know if you are stuck in negativity? There are several indicators that can help you identify if you have a negative attitude.  Such as:

1) Lack of sleep - are you tossing & turning? Does your mind race?

2) Tension - do you feel tension in the body?

3) Reduced energy - is it a struggle to participate in activities?

While you can't always be positive, there are ways to reset your mind and soul to be more resilient and create a positive attitude. Here are three actions you can take to instill positivity in your life.

BALANCE NEGATIVE ACTIONS WITH A POSITIVE ACTIVITY

This can be anything that brings you joy. Maybe taking the dog for a walk with or without others. Going for a bike ride or listening to music. Walking or hiking in the woods or taking an exercise class like spin or mega-former. The key is to do something that is relaxing or meaningful to you. This helps to disengage from the negativity and bring positivity to your day.  I also find that by doing something just for me, it helps reduce stress and allows me to refocus my mind.

USE AN ESSENTIAL OIL TO PROMOTE POSITIVITY

If you haven't started using essential oils, now is the time to try them. Essential oils can be applied to the skin, inhaled or ingested.  I prefer using a diffuser. There are a variety of oils for many health benefits. To clear negativity, look for lemon, peppermint or pine oils.

How does it work? When essential oils are used in a diffuser, the odor goes through the nose and affects the brain through receptor sites, one of which is the limbic system. The limbic system is connected to the parts of the brain that control blood pressure, breathing, memory and stress levels. This is why smell can trigger emotions.  (Source: University of Minnesota) There are plenty of essential oils available online to purchase. I currently use the brand Kis Oils.

MEDITATE

Meditation can help restore a positive mindset. The reason meditation works is because it helps us go from high frequency brainwaves to lower frequency brainwaves, which activates different centers of the brain.
