4 Reasons Why You Need Eucalyptus Oil Right Now

September 27, 2019

The news reported that the flu is supposed to arrive early this year. I do not get the flu shot because I do not have any underlying conditions that would compromise my immune system. I try to live a healthy life by exercising routinely, eating a mostly plant-based diet and taking supplements everyday such as vitamin D and probiotics. This helps support my immune system to avoid getting sick.

Even though I don't get the flu or colds that often, I get stuffy and have nasal congestion during the season. I work in an office building that doesn't always have the best air circulating. When I feel stuffy, I use eucalyptus oil in a diffuser or in a diffuser necklace. The diffuser necklace is very inexpensive on amazon and you can buy it here.  I believe in the ability of essential oils to help heal our bodies naturally. I've had good experience using lavender oil to help fall asleep.

I happen to see a quick blurb about how eucalyptus oil is good for congestion. I had some in the house, so I figured let's try it.  My house is old (built in 1940) and while I've renovated it, replaced the furnace and had all the ducts cleaned, it is still very dusty. When the heat is running, I have congestion, especially in the morning.

Running eucalyptus in the diffuser, I definitely can breath better and it helps loosen any stuffiness I have in my sinuses. Since I've had a good experience with the oil, I wanted to learn more.  One study I found stated that other plant oils may be more microbiologically active, the safety of moderate doses of eucalyptus oil and its broad-spectrum antimicrobial action make it an attractive alternative to pharmaceuticals. (Source: NIH) This means you can feel good about trying eucalyptus oil as a natural solution to a cough cold or flu before getting an antibiotic. While eucalyptus oil has many uses, here are 4 reasons why you should be using it during cough cold & flu season.

#1 STIMULATES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Eucalyptus oil is known to stimulate protective cells in the body. These cells are responsible for ingesting harmful foreign particles, bacteria and dead or dying cells. The cells are essential for fighting infections. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phagocyte)  Aromatherapist KG Stiles recommends using Eucalyptus as an inhalant or in your diffuser to deliver the healing vapors directly into your circulatory system via the lungs.

#2 CONTROLS COUGHING

The active ingredient in eucalyptus oil is Eucalyptol, which helps control coughs. There are cough drops that contain eucalyptus oil if you are on the go and can't spend time with a diffuser. You can rub a little oil on your pillow to ensure a good night’s sleep if you are troubled with congestion and wet cough.

#3 SINUS DECONGESTANT

As I mentioned above, the biggest benefit I experience when using eucalyptus oil is the decongestant. I simply run the diffuser for 1 hour while I am working and it definitely helps to loosen any stuffiness I have. Natural Living Ideas states you can also use eucalyptus oil in a carrier oil and rub it on your chest to help relieve congestion. (Source: http://www.naturallivingideas.com/benefits-uses-of-eucalyptus-oil/) HealthLine states eucalyptus oil functions quite similar to that of menthol as it acts on receptors in the nasal mucous membranes, resulting in the lessening of symptoms of nasal stuffiness.

#4 REMOVES INTESTINAL GERMS

Our digestive system can be thrown off when experiencing colds, flu and seasonal allergies. The constant dripping of sinuses and congestion in the respiratory system can leak into the stomach and intestines affecting our digestion. Studies have shown that ingesting eucalyptus oil can deter many of the bacterial, microbial, and parasitic conditions that arise in the various parts of the body, particularly in susceptible areas like the colon and intestine. Eucalyptus oil can be easily found online. Amazon has a variety of organic essential oil options to choose from. Just like foods we ingest, if we buy essential oils that are extracted from plants that have chemicals and pesticides, the oils will be contaminated. Another important feature of using organic plants for essential oils is that the plants grow freely without the aid of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Some of the important parts of the plants that are naturally produced by the plant to protect itself from pests and other environmental stressors are the key components in the oils that make them so effective.
